A Different Meaning
Thanksgiving should be renamed as Eat-As-Much-As-You-Can Day or Gluttony Day; that might sound funny to you but it's true because almost all who celebrate this holiday eat too much food for themselves. I had thought before that Thanksgiving was another day to celebrate, to have fun, and have a day off from school. I saw how people love to pile high their plates with food after the prayer, and they would sit at the sofa to watch TV.
I had missed the real meaning of Thanksgiving.
The Real Meaning
Thanksgiving according the Merriam-Webster Dictionary means "the act of giving thanks" or "a prayer expressing gratitude". * Today, most Americans who celebrate this day have forgotten to give thanks to God, or they just don't want to give thanks to Him because they don't believe in a Divine Being. I too had forgotten why we, Americans, celebrate.
The First Thanksgiving
On November 1621, the Pilgrims and the Native Americans celebrated a feast together at Plymouth to give thanks to God for providing a bountiful harvest. They were thankful for the help of their Native American friends that year. They had a cruel winter that only 53 people survived from 102 people who boarded the Mayflower to Plymouth. Without the help from Squanto and his tribe, the Pilgrims wouldn't have survived or would have turned out like Jamestown.
We should give God our gratitude not only on Thanksgiving, but everyday even when we don't see anything to thank God for. Yes, it's hard if you are going through a rough patch in life, but you can still be thankful. Thank God for the life, the family, and the friends He has given you.
Here is a verse to remember:
"Let us come before him in thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods."
